OUR STORY

Broomswick Candle Co originated out of a curiosity for History, antiquity, and simpler times. Long before I crafted my first candle, I enjoyed reading classical literature for the detailed narratives of bygone societies. While studying History, I began to feel like a homesick time traveler stuck in the 21st century. It is a peculiar notion to be nostalgic for a time you have never experienced.

Not obtuse to the challenges of past generations, I remained curious. I further explored my love for history through antique lantern collecting and became fascinated by Pre-Industrial Revolution life. I often pondered how different it must have been to live in a world where the night sky was not masked with artificial light. To live in a time when all of society rose and set with the sun; to exist when seas were mapped by the stars, and the zodiac was not a trend but a calendar of space and time. It is easy to romanticize that which one has not experienced, especially when perceived through an untamed imagination.

I became further aware of this notion while star gazing in a remote region in Alaska. For on that trip, I observed the stars twinkling for the first time. Before that moment, I had always perceived the popular nursery rhyme, “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”, published by Jane Taylor, in 1806, to be an artistic rendition of the night sky, however, I was wrong. Her poem was a primary source of a 19th-century night sky.

Experiencing the night's boundless, twinkling, splendor was a profound moment in my life. In that moment, I realized I wanted to live an intentional life, a life worth romanticizing. I too wanted to find poetic poise in simple joys.

Grounded in the modern world, I set out to learn something old-- traditional taper candle making. Making tapers became a creative outlet that allowed me to use knowledge from the past to create warm, clean burning light; and, I quickly found myself turning off the harsh electrical lights in my home for the warm glow of a beeswax taper.

After years of making tapers, I am excited to be crafting beautiful candles for market. All Broomswick Candle Co products are made with 100% natural waxes (coconut, soy, or beeswax),  phthalate-free scent oils, and are shipped in eco-conscious packaging. To pay it forward, 10% of all profits from the DARK SKY Collection (STARDUST, DARK SKY, MILKY WAY) will be donated to the International Dark-Sky Association.  

It is my hope that Broomswick Candle Co collections will spark a curiosity in others to investigate the mystery, history, and lore of bygone generations, and to not be afraid to look to the past and learn something old.
